Introductory talk

As part of the celebration of the anniversary of the Faculty on 1 December 2017, we organise an exhibition with the title: Language and Culture Abundance - translations by the Faculty of Philosophy Professors. The exhibition is a selection from the diverse works of translation by our professors and associates since 1954. The Faculty of Philosophy is an institution that teaches and researches different languages and nurtures different cultures. At the same time, the Faculty is one of the most significant institutions in Serbia to offer courses of the Serbian language with elements of Serbian culture to foreign students, language teachers and professors all year long. In this way, for the past several decades, the Faculty has been building "bridges" between cultures, exchanging ideas and information, and fostering intercultural communication.

A special role in creating valuable links between the Serbian and other cultures is the one of our professors whose art and love for translation brings us closer to distant lands, writers, topics and cultures. We would like this exhibition to be a presentation of the noteworthy works of translation by our professors and associates, which is undeservingly towered by their tenure and research. We would like to introduce our young colleagues to the renowned professors and their translations of remarkable works, but also to remind us all that the Faculty of Philosophy has always been home to exceptional translators.

The exhibition consists of three sections: (1) Translations of Serbian works of literature to world languages, (2) Translations of significant foreign works of literature to Serbian, and (3) The awarded translations by the Faculty of Philosophy professors. The exhibition also features the Catalogue (a comprehensive selection), which comprises 1188 bibliographic units, translations of books and articles in serial publications, from different fields of study: literature, linguistics, history, sociology, philosophy, cultural history, religion, mythology, pedagogy, etc. The Catalogue is sorted alphabetically according to the last names of the authors. The bibliographic units are sorted alphabetically within every entry under a translator's last and first name. The units are exported from the electronic catalogue of the Library. The COBISS-ID number is the link that directs subscribers to the union bibliographic/catalogue database COBISS.SR. By clicking on the COBISS-ID number, the subscribers can obtain information on the location and book number of the requested publication.

The Catalogue also features short biographies of our professors-translators and the list of the award-winning professors and translations. The last part of the Catalogue is a registry of areas, which will facilitate the search and interaction within the electronic Catalogue itself.

The abundance and diversity of the presented works of translations, both at the exibition and in the Catalogue, will represent a permanent cultural monument in the funcion of promoting and preserving the cultural heritage.
